Explore Tanzania’s Other Mountains: Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai & Usambara

While Mount Kilimanjaro is the most famous trekking destination in the country, Tanzania is also home to several other spectacular mountains that offer unique adventures, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. For travelers who want to explore beyond Kilimanjaro, mountains such as Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the Usambara Mountains provide incredible hiking opportunities and unforgettable scenery.

These mountains offer different types of trekking experiences — from wildlife-filled trails and volcanic climbs to peaceful forest hikes and cultural tours in local communities. Whether you are preparing for Kilimanjaro, looking for a challenging climb, or simply want to enjoy nature and Tanzania’s beautiful landscapes, these destinations are perfect alternatives.

At Kilismile Trails and Safaris, we organize guided treks and adventures to Tanzania’s most remarkable mountains, led by experienced local guides who ensure safety, comfort, and an authentic experience.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 ft). Located inside Arusha National Park, this mountain offers one of the most scenic trekking experiences in East Africa.

Climbing Mount Meru usually takes 3 to 4 days, and the trek passes through beautiful forests, open moorlands, and rocky alpine terrain. One of the unique features of this climb is the chance to see wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, and antelope along the lower slopes, since the trail passes through a protected national park.

The final ascent to Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru, follows a dramatic crater rim with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. On clear days, climbers can even see the towering peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Mount Meru is often recommended as excellent acclimatization for Kilimanjaro or as a rewarding trek on its own.

Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of the most unique mountains in Africa. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai people, it is an active volcano located near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania.

Standing at 2,962 meters, Ol Doinyo Lengai offers a challenging and adventurous climb. Most climbs begin late at night, allowing trekkers to reach the summit at sunrise. The climb is steep and physically demanding, but the reward is an incredible sunrise view over the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the surrounding volcanic landscapes.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is also the only active volcano in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, making it a fascinating destination for geology enthusiasts and adventure travelers.

Usambara Mountains

Usambara Mountains are among Tanzania’s most beautiful and peaceful mountain regions, located in the northeastern part of the country near the town of Lushoto. These mountains are famous for their cool climate, green landscapes, forests, and scenic viewpoints.

Unlike Kilimanjaro or Meru, the Usambara Mountains are perfect for relaxed hiking, nature walks, and cultural experiences. Visitors can explore charming villages, interact with local communities, and enjoy breathtaking viewpoints such as Irente Viewpoint, which overlooks the vast plains below.

The area is also rich in biodiversity, with unique plants, birds, and forests that make it a great destination for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a peaceful mountain escape.
