Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Africa’s Garden of Eden.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations in Africa and a highlight of any Tanzania safari. Located in northern Tanzania, this protected area covers about 8,300 square kilometers and is home to stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.

The conservation area is most famous for the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Formed over two million years ago, the crater is about 600 meters deep and stretches roughly 20 kilometers across, creating a natural wildlife sanctuary where animals live year-round.

Wildlife in Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino. The crater floor is home to thousands of animals including:

  • Lions

  • Elephants

  • Black rhinos

  • Buffalo

  • Zebras

  • Wildebeest

  • Hyenas

  • Gazelles

  • Hippos

Because animals remain inside the crater throughout the year, visitors have an excellent chance of seeing many species during a single game drive.

Landscape and Natural Beauty

The Ngorongoro area features a variety of breathtaking landscapes including crater lakes, open grasslands, forests, and volcanic highlands. One of the most beautiful spots inside the crater is Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake often covered with flamingos.

From the crater rim, visitors can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the vast wildlife-filled basin below.

Culture and Local Communities

Unlike many national parks, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area allows the Maasai people to live alongside wildlife. Visitors can learn about Maasai traditions, culture, and their unique way of life through cultural visits and village tours.

Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro can be visited throughout the year because wildlife remains inside the crater. However:

  • June to October – Best wildlife viewing during the dry season

  • November to May – Green landscapes and excellent birdwatching
