This 3-day fly-in safari in the Northern Serengeti is specially designed for travelers who want to witness the Great Migration River Crossing in Serengeti. The safari takes place between July and early September, when thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather at the Mara River and attempt to cross in search of fresh grass.

During the river crossing, animals face strong water currents and predators like crocodiles, making it one of the most exciting wildlife moments in Africa. There is no fixed time for crossings, which makes the experience even more thrilling and natural.

You will stay in a camp located close to the main crossing points, giving you a great chance to reach the river quickly when the action begins. Even outside the migration, this area offers amazing safari views, wide open savannahs, and rich wildlife including lions, leopards, and other big animals.

This safari starts in the remote Kogatende area of Northern Serengeti, which is best accessed by a short bush flight. Flights are available from major airports in Tanzania, including Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar. Domestic flights are not included in the package, but we can arrange them for you depending on your travel plans.

Plan Day By Day

Day 1: Fly Into Serengeti National park - (Kogatende Airsrip)

Your journey begins with a scenic flight to Kogatende Airstrip in the Northern Serengeti, the best area to experience the Great Migration River Crossing in Serengeti.

On arrival, you will be welcomed by your safari guide and transferred to your tented lodge. After check-in, you will enjoy lunch and have some time to relax in the peaceful wilderness surroundings. Later in the afternoon, you will go on your first game drive—so keep your camera ready, as wildlife sightings can start immediately.

From July to September, this region becomes the stage for the Great Migration. Thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather at the Mara River, attempting to cross in search of fresh grazing. During the crossing, they face strong river currents and predators such as crocodiles, making it one of the most dramatic wildlife events in Africa.

You will explore the area in open safari vehicles for the best viewing experience and closer connection with nature. If you prefer a closed vehicle, this can be arranged in advance.

Note: Domestic flights are not included in the package price. Please share your departure point so we can assist with booking your flight. Most flights arrive in the morning, and your guide will be waiting for you at the airstrip upon arrival.

Your second day in Kogatende takes you deeper into the heart of the Great Migration River Crossing in Serengeti.

The famous Mara River flows through this area and forms a natural border between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. It is here that hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and other grazing animals gather to cross during the annual migration.

This dramatic movement usually happens between mid-July and late August each year. It is one of the most incredible wildlife events in the world and is often filmed by major wildlife channels such as National Geographic, Animal Planet, and Discovery Channel. The Serengeti is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of this natural wonder.

You have two flexible options depending on your preference:

You may choose to enjoy an early morning game drive after breakfast. If you decide this option, we recommend an early breakfast so you can maximize your final chance to see wildlife on the way to the airstrip. Your guide will also look out for any interesting animal sightings along the route.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a relaxed morning at the lodge. After breakfast, you will pack your belongings at your own pace and then be transferred to the airstrip in time for your flight.

Both options are flexible, and your guide will adjust the schedule to suit your wishes on the day.

Finally, you will take a scenic flight over the beautiful landscapes of Tanzania, marking the end of your incredible Serengeti adventure.
