The 7-Day Rongai Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border, this route offers a quieter trekking experience, beautiful wilderness, and excellent views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

The extra acclimatization day makes this itinerary ideal for climbers who want a higher summit success rate and a gradual ascent to the Roof of Africa.

During the drive, you will get your first glimpse of Tanzania’s beautiful landscapes and, if the weather is clear, you may even see the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Moshi, preparing for the unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa. 🏔️

  • Habitat: Montana Forest
  • Hiking Time: 4-5hrs
  • Distance: 8 km

Your climb begins at Rongai Gate (Nalemuru – 1,950 m) on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenya border. After registration and meeting your mountain crew, you will start the trek through the beautiful rainforest and montane forest zone.

The trail gradually climbs through a peaceful wilderness area with fewer climbers compared to other Kilimanjaro routes. Along the way, you may see wildlife such as colobus monkeys, antelopes, and various bird species that inhabit this quiet side of the mountain.

After several hours of trekking, the trail leaves the forest and enters the moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes more open and the views expand across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will arrive at First Cave Camp (2,830 m), also known as Simba Camp, where your support team will have prepared your tents and a warm meal.

Spend the evening relaxing, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, and preparing for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • Habitat Heather & Moorland
  • Hiking Time: 5-6hrs
  • Distancee: 10km

After breakfast at Simba Camp (First Cave – 2,830 m), you will continue your ascent on the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs through the moorland zone, offering expansive views of the surrounding wilderness and the plains toward the Kenya border.

As you hike higher, the vegetation becomes more open, and the landscape changes into a rugged mountain environment with unique alpine plants. Along the way, you will begin to see the impressive Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest peak of Kilimanjaro, rising dramatically above the landscape.

After several hours of trekking and a steady climb, you will arrive at Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m), located in a sheltered valley with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Here you can relax, enjoy dinner prepared by your mountain crew, and rest while your body continues to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.

  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland → Alpine Desert
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking Time: 5 hours

After breakfast at Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m), you will continue your trek toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m) on Mount Kilimanjaro. Today’s hike is shorter but steeper as you climb into the high alpine zone of the mountain.

The trail ascends through open moorland with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. As you gain altitude, the rugged and dramatic slopes of Mawenzi Peak come into full view, creating one of the most impressive scenery on Kilimanjaro.

After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi and next to a small alpine lake (tarn). This peaceful camp offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The afternoon is usually spent resting or taking a short acclimatization walk to help your body adjust to the altitude before continuing the climb.

  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
  • Acclimatization Time: 6 hours

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, which is very important for increasing your chances of reaching the summit.

After breakfast, you may take a short hike along the slopes of Mawenzi Ridge, gaining additional altitude before returning to Mawenzi Tarn Camp. This follows the recommended “climb high, sleep low” principle that helps the body adapt to the thinner air at higher elevations.

Spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying the incredible scenery, and preparing for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro climb.

  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
  • Distance: ~8 km
  • Hiking Time: 6 hours

After breakfast at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m), you will continue your trek across the wide alpine desert of Mount Kilimanjaro toward Kibo Hut (4,720 m).

Today’s route crosses the dramatic saddle between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak, a vast and open landscape of volcanic rock and alpine desert. The terrain is mostly gradual but can feel challenging due to the high altitude and thin air. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of Kibo’s summit cone ahead and the rugged slopes of Mawenzi behind you.

After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Here you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

The evening is usually spent relaxing and preparing your gear for the summit climb before getting a few hours of sleep.

  • Vegetation Zone: Arctic Zone → Moorland
  • Distance: ~21 km
  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

The summit attempt begins around midnight from Kibo Hut (4,700 m) on Mount Kilimanjaro. Equipped with headlamps, you will start the challenging climb toward the summit, hiking slowly through steep scree and rocky paths in the cold mountain night.

After several hours of steady ascent, you will reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim. Here, you will witness an incredible sunrise over Africa, a truly unforgettable moment after the long climb.

From Gilman’s Point, the trek continues along the crater rim for another 1–2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is an extraordinary achievement and the highlight of the entire Kilimanjaro adventure.

After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, you will begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch. Later, the journey continues downhill through the alpine desert and moorland zones until you reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for dinner and an overnight stay. This is a long but rewarding day as you complete the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland → Rainforest
  • Distance: ~20 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin the final descent through the beautiful landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually leads down from the moorland zone back into the lush rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes dense and green once again.

Along the way, you will pass Mandara Hut and continue descending through scenic forest trails filled with tall trees, moss, and colorful birdlife. You may also spot monkeys and other wildlife that inhabit the lower slopes of the mountain.

After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) where your trek officially ends. Here, you will sign out at the park office and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate if you successfully reached Uhuru Peak.

Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy a well-deserved rest after conquering the Roof of Africa.

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, you will have time to relax and reflect on your incredible Mount Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.

Depending on your travel plans, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your international departure flight.

If you wish to extend your Tanzania experience, this day can also mark the beginning of another exciting journey:
