6 Day Rongai Route
PRICE FROM $1,750
6-Day Rongai Route – Overview
The Rongai Route is one of the most scenic and quieter ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This route approaches the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border, offering a unique perspective and fewer crowds compared to other popular trails.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate and passes through remote wilderness areas where climbers may encounter wildlife such as antelope and various bird species. The route gradually ascends through different vegetation zones, from forest and moorland to alpine desert, providing beautiful and diverse landscapes along the way.
One of the highlights of the Rongai Route is the spectacular view of Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest peak of Kilimanjaro. Trekkers also cross the wide and dramatic saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast alpine desert that offers incredible views of the mountain’s rugged terrain.
The summit attempt is made via Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, the descent follows the Marangu Route, finishing at Marangu Gate.
The 6-day Rongai Route is a great option for climbers looking for a quieter path with beautiful scenery and a steady ascent. It provides a rewarding Kilimanjaro experience with good acclimatization and excellent summit opportunities.

Day 1: Rongai Gate / Nalemuru (1,950 m) – First Cave Camp (2,830 m)

After several hours of trekking, the trail leaves the forest and enters the moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes more open and the views expand across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will arrive at First Cave Camp (2,830 m), also known as Simba Camp, where your support team will have prepared your tents and a warm meal.
Spend the evening relaxing, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, and preparing for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Day 2: Simba Camp / First Cave (2,830 m) – Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m)
- Habitat Heather & Moorland
- Hiking Time: 5-6hrs
- Distancee: 10km
After breakfast at Simba Camp (First Cave – 2,830 m), you will continue your ascent on the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs through the moorland zone, offering expansive views of the surrounding wilderness and the plains toward the Kenya border.
As you hike higher, the vegetation becomes more open, and the landscape changes into a rugged mountain environment with unique alpine plants. Along the way, you will begin to see the impressive Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest peak of Kilimanjaro, rising dramatically above the landscape.
After several hours of trekking and a steady climb, you will arrive at Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m), located in a sheltered valley with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Here you can relax, enjoy dinner prepared by your mountain crew, and rest while your body continues to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m)
- Vegetation Zone: Moorland → Alpine Desert
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 5 hours
After breakfast at Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m), you will continue your trek toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m) on Mount Kilimanjaro. Today’s hike is shorter but steeper as you climb into the high alpine zone of the mountain.
The trail ascends through open moorland with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. As you gain altitude, the rugged and dramatic slopes of Mawenzi Peak come into full view, creating one of the most impressive scenery on Kilimanjaro.
After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi and next to a small alpine lake (tarn). This peaceful camp offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Today’s route crosses the dramatic saddle between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak, a vast and open landscape of volcanic rock and alpine desert. The terrain is mostly gradual but can feel challenging due to the high altitude and thin air. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of Kibo’s summit cone ahead and the rugged slopes of Mawenzi behind you.
After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Here you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
The evening is usually spent relaxing and preparing your gear for the summit climb before getting a few hours of sleep.

- Vegetation Zone: Arctic Zone → Moorland
- Distance: ~21 km
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
The summit attempt begins around midnight from Kibo Hut (4,700 m) on Mount Kilimanjaro. Equipped with headlamps, you will start the challenging climb toward the summit, hiking slowly through steep scree and rocky paths in the cold mountain night.
After several hours of steady ascent, you will reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim. Here, you will witness an incredible sunrise over Africa, a truly unforgettable moment after the long climb.
From Gilman’s Point, the trek continues along the crater rim for another 1–2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is an extraordinary achievement and the highlight of the entire Kilimanjaro adventure.
After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, you will begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch. Later, the journey continues downhill through the alpine desert and moorland zones until you reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for dinner and an overnight stay. This is a long but rewarding day as you complete the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu Gate (1,870 m)
- Vegetation Zone: Moorland → Rainforest
- Distance: ~20 km
- Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin the final descent through the beautiful landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually leads down from the moorland zone back into the lush rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes dense and green once again.
Along the way, you will pass Mandara Hut and continue descending through scenic forest trails filled with tall trees, moss, and colorful birdlife. You may also spot monkeys and other wildlife that inhabit the lower slopes of the mountain.
After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) where your trek officially ends. Here, you will sign out at the park office and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate if you successfully reached Uhuru Peak.
Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy a well-deserved rest after conquering the Roof of Africa.

From day one, the agency was exceptionally organized and highly professional, which made the entire climb feel safe, smooth, and well planned. What really set them apart was the human side of the experience. Everyone—from the guides to the support team—was incredibly kind, warm, and genuinely caring. They created such a positive atmosphere every single day that even the toughest moments felt manageable. The food was outstanding, far beyond what I ever expected on a mountain trek—fresh, plentiful, and always a morale booster. And when it came to summit night, the guides were absolutely phenomenal: strong leaders, constant motivators, and deeply attentive, pushing us forward with encouragement exactly when we needed it most. Thanks to their expertise, energy, and heart, I stood on the roof of Africa feeling supported and proud. I would recommend this agency without hesitation to anyone dreaming of climbing Kilimanjaro. An unforgettable experience from start to summit!Posted on RudinkaVerified Best trip ever Climbing Kilimanjaro with KiliSmile in cooperation with 4Challenge was one of the most powerful and unforgettable experiences of my life. The mountain was absolutely breathtaking, but what truly made the difference was the people. Our guide Gidion deserves a special mention. He didn’t just guide us up the mountain — he carried me mentally all the way to the summit. On the hardest days, when altitude and exhaustion kicked in, Gidion was calm, positive, and incredibly supportive. He is cool, safe, trustworthy, kind, and always cheerful, with an amazing ability to read people and know exactly when to motivate, encourage, or simply walk quietly next to you. His professionalism and experience made me feel safe at every single moment. The entire 40-person team was exceptional — from assistant guides to porters and the cooks. The food was surprisingly delicious and nutritious, always on time, and prepared with care even at high altitude. The team worked together like a well-oiled machine, always smiling, supportive, and deeply respectful. Thanks to this incredible team spirit and leadership, we made it to the top. It was not just a summit — it was a journey of trust, resilience, and human connection. If you’re considering Kilimanjaro, I can’t recommend KiliSmile & 4Challenge enough. And if you get the chance to climb with Gidion, you are in the best hands possible.Asante sana to the whole team — I will never forget this experience.Posted on Ada DVerified Non stop to the top From the very beginning, their team showed professionalism, attention to detail. They were making everyone feel safe and protected. The guides Hussain and Denis were extremly supportive and were motivating us tu achieve our goal. They ensured we felt safe and well-prepared all the time, every day during briefing after long hard day they were giving us hope but without minimazing the difficulties of the next day. The porters were our heroes, making this whole trekking unbelievebly luxurious. The portable toilet was bleesing during windy, cold nights. And I cannot even imagine going up without them. The meals were nutritious and tasty, and surprisingle diverse. Even though I was fighting with altitude sickness and dealing with lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting the cook and waiter and our guides were making sure that I eat something and were preparing something special for me. Especially worth mentionting is the magic of Hussain, Denis and Hasan during the worst moments doring the atack, when it's cold, windy and dark. You are fighting with your inner demons, loosing motivation. And then out of nowhere you hear your name in the song in swahilii, you doon't understand the words but you feel the warmth pulsing around your group and new strength coming to your body. It's spirituall and transcendental moment.I recommend KiliSmile from the bottom of my heart. They really make " One dream, One team" possible. And I am sure that without them I wouldn't achive the top.Posted on Camper06989006691Verified Safari Experience We had a great experience! Our guide was awesome and very accommodating. I’m incredibly grateful to Hashim, who looked after me and motivated me whenever I felt weak or tired. Hashim always watching over everyone, ready to help the moment someone felt unwell, exhausted, or started doubting themselves.Throughout the climb, Ayoub, Hashim, and the rest of the team showed great experience and awareness, giving me and the other participants a strong sense of safety and calm. Ayoub and his crew are wonderful, cheerful people who never showed any fatigue — they were always full of energy, smiles, and songs that kept us motivated all the way.During the trip to Ngorongoro and Serengeti, I was lucky to be in the car driven by the best driver in all of Tanzania — Lucas.
