The 4-Day Mount Meru trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding mountain adventures in Tanzania. Rising to 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and is located inside Arusha National Park.

Mount Meru offers spectacular views of forests, wildlife, and dramatic volcanic landscapes. The trek passes through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforest to alpine desert, and provides breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. The climb is also an excellent option for acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro.

Arrival Date

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you directly to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for check-in and relaxation after your journey. The transfer takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic.

Your adventure begins with a short drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, located in Arusha National Park. After registration and meeting your guide and armed park ranger, the trek begins through beautiful open grasslands and forest.

Along the way, you may see wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, monkeys, and antelope, which makes Mount Meru unique compared to other mountain treks in Tanzania.

The trail gradually climbs through dense forest to Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend your first night on the mountain.

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland

After breakfast, you continue trekking through forest and open heathland toward Saddle Hut, located below the summit of Mount Meru.

The trail passes through beautiful heather and moorland landscapes, offering stunning views of the Meru Crater and the surrounding plains. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes more sparse and the views become more dramatic.

After reaching Saddle Hut, you can take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) before returning to the hut for dinner and rest.

  • Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert → Moorland 

Summit day begins around midnight. Using headlamps, you start the steep ascent toward Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru.

The trail follows a narrow ridge along the crater rim, offering dramatic views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience, with incredible views of the surrounding landscapes and often a clear view of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and breakfast before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.

  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest

After breakfast, you descend through the beautiful forest trails back to Momella Gate. Along the way, you may once again see wildlife and enjoy the peaceful environment of Arusha National Park.

At the gate, you will receive your Mount Meru summit certificate before being transferred back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, you will have some time to relax before your scheduled transfer. Depending on your flight schedule, our driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight home.
