The 3-Day Ol Doinyo Lengai trek is one of the most unique and adventurous climbing experiences in Tanzania. Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai people, is an active volcano located in the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron.

Rising to 2,962 meters, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, making it a fascinating destination for adventurers and nature lovers. The climb is steep and challenging, usually done overnight, allowing climbers to reach the summit at sunrise and enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and the surrounding volcanic landscapes.

Arrival Date

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you directly to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for check-in and relaxation after your journey. The transfer takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha or Moshi toward the remote and beautiful area of Lake Natron, located at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai. The drive takes approximately 5–7 hours, passing through Maasai villages, open savannah landscapes, and views of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

Upon arrival at Lake Natron, you will check in at your lodge or campsite and enjoy lunch while taking in the spectacular views of the volcano rising above the plains. In the afternoon, you can take a short walk to explore the nearby area or visit the beautiful Ngare Sero Waterfalls, where you can relax and swim in the cool natural pools.

In the evening, enjoy dinner and rest early to prepare for the overnight climb.

Your summit attempt begins around midnight, when temperatures are cooler and conditions are better for climbing. Accompanied by experienced local guides, you begin the steep ascent up the slopes of Ol Doinyo Lengai.

The climb is physically demanding, with steep volcanic trails and loose ash in some sections. However, the effort is rewarded when you reach the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise over Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley.

From the top, climbers enjoy incredible panoramic views stretching across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. You may also see volcanic formations and the unique landscape that makes this mountain so special.

After spending some time at the summit, you descend carefully back to the base of the mountain and return to your accommodation for breakfast and rest. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing or exploring the Lake Natron area, famous for its flamingos and dramatic scenery.

After an early breakfast, you will visit the shores of Lake Natron, one of the most important breeding areas for flamingos in East Africa. During the walk along the lake, you will have the opportunity to see thousands of lesser flamingos and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Great Rift Valley with views of Ol Doinyo Lengai rising in the background.

Your guide will explain the unique ecosystem of Lake Natron, which is known for its alkaline waters and rich birdlife. The lake is also home to many other bird species and offers beautiful photographic opportunities in the early morning light.

After the excursion, you will return to your lodge or campsite for a short rest before beginning the scenic drive back to Arusha or Moshi. The journey passes through traditional Maasai villages, open savannah landscapes, and dramatic views of the Rift Valley escarpment.

You will arrive in the afternoon, marking the end of your Ol Doinyo Lengai climbing adventure with Kilismile Trails and Safaris.

After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, you will have some time to relax before your scheduled transfer. Depending on your flight schedule, our driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight home.
